UK mental health statistics and work - The UK is facing a significant mental health crisis, with statistics indicating a growing prevalence of mental health issues in the workplace. Here are some key findings:
• 15% of UK workers have an existing mental health condition, and mental health was the 5th most common reason for sickness absence in 2022,
accounting for 7.9% of occurrences.
• 79% of employees are experiencing moderate-to-high stress levels, with younger employees (16-24) and women showing the highest stress levels.
• 63% of UK employees exhibited signs of burnout, such as exhaustion and disengagement, up from 51% two years ago.
• 875,000 workers suffered from work-related stress, depression, or anxiety in 2022/23, resulting in 17.1 million working days lost.
•
Work-related mental health issues cost the UK economy £57.4 billion each year, nearly doubling in recent years.
• Financial pressure is now the top external stressor, affecting 41% of employees, an increase from 37% last year.
These statistics highlight the urgent need for organisations to foster positive mental health and provide support to employees facing mental health challenges.

STATE OF MIND SPORT can support the development of mental health champions in your workplace.
Workplace mental health champions are employees who challenge stigma and encourage positive mental health in the organisation and for its workforce - both paid and voluntary. Mental health champions aren’t intended to replace or duplicate the important role of human resources (HR) within your organisation. Instead, they work alongside your HR team to create a positive mental health at work experience for everyone.

A more welcoming and inclusive workplace could help you:
• Recruit and retain staff to ensure your organisation has the best possible workforce and to save time and money on recruitment.
• Provide development opportunities for staff.
